  16. <p>     In the eyes of a skinhead, Portland, Oregon, looks like the
  17. city of the future. Not that Loren Christensen would agree;
  18. the gang enforcement officer with the Portland police maintains
  19. that his town has "tolerance for different life-styles, as long
  20. as they're liberal life-styles. There's no tolerance for skinheads."
  21. Yet rival gangs of bald men with tattoos have now lent this
  22. chamomile-and-bean-sprout metropolis a Mad Max edge.

  24. <p>     Until November of 1988 Portland had no more racist fanatics
  25. than any other Northwestern town. But when the East Side White
  26. Pride gang killed an Ethiopian student named Mulugeta Seraw
  27. and the murder made national headlines, about 200 skinhead newcomers
  28. flocked to the city.

  30. <p>     Today it takes a keen sense of iconography to know the players.
  31. Like their cousins elsewhere, Portland's racist skinheads sport
  32. flight jackets, suspenders and Doc Martens with shoelaces in
  33. various colors: white for racial purity, red for the blood they
  34. are willing to shed and yellow as a signal they have shed someone
  35. else's. But another gang of skinheads is slightly different
  36. in appearance: the swastikas have diagonal lines slashed through
  37. them, and black-and-white breast-pocket patches depict a crucified
  38. skinhead with the letters SHARP written over the top. These
  39. are the Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice--the remnant,
  40. less prominent in other cities, of what was once a nonracialist
  41. baldie majority. The antiracists, says Christensen, "think
  42. the racists give true skinheads a bad image." And so they fight
  43. them.

  45. <p>     When SHARP members started showing up in Portland, other liberal
  46. militant groups such as the gay organization ACT UP reached
  47. out to them but soon retreated. SHARP was intent on fighting
  48. fire with fire; soon rumbles ensued, and last New Year's Day,
  49. during a confrontation on a snowy street, they shot a racist
  50. skin with an SKS--a bayoneted, semiautomatic assault rifle
  51. similar to an AK-47. "They blew his head to smithereens," says
  52. Christensen.
  53. </p>
  54. <p>     Since then, he reports, antiracists have patrolled Portland's
  55. downtown area, "hanging around in coffee shops and occasionally
  56. jumping somebody they perceive to be a racist." Meanwhile, on
  57. the outskirts, the racists have been more active in the past
  58. seven weeks than they have been in years, attacking two blacks,
  59. two whites who associated with blacks, a gay and a Native American.
